At Home in... – Steinberg am See
From a lignite mining town to a natural paradise—that is the story of Steinberg in the Upper Palatinate. The village has been transformed beyond recognition since the 1980s: where kilometers of conveyor belts and massive bucket-wheel excavators once defined the "lunar landscape" surrounding this industrial and mining village, Eastern Bavaria's largest lake is now being created following the closure of the open-cast mine in the 1980s. Steinberg has become "Steinberg am See" (Steinberg by the Lake)—a village with a future. It is an attractive local recreation area, and the town—now home to nearly 2,000 residents—is growing, bucking the trend in a region where few other places are expanding. Young locals are staying and starting families, while people from neighboring communities are also keen to live by the lake. Steinberg is a true paradise for water sports enthusiasts in the Upper Palatinate Lake District; a wakeboarding facility, sailing school, yacht club, boat rental, climbing wall, bouncy castle, and sandy beach draw in swimmers and tourists alike.
