Goodbye Deutschland! The Emigrants – On the other Side of the World
The Riediger family is leaving the quiet town of Hohenbrunn in Bavaria and heading to Wellington, New Zealand. Stefanie (39) and her husband Jörg (41) are taking their four children—Katharina (14), Maria (12), Maximilian (11), and Leopold (6)—with them to their new home. The large family no longer feels happy in Germany; the pressure on the children at school is too great. Jörg even works three jobs just so the family can live comfortably. They hope all of that is about to change for the better, though the couple doesn't yet have a concrete plan for how to achieve it.
Above all, they need to secure a visa quickly; otherwise, they won't be allowed to stay in their dream country. They also need to find a school for all the children right away to avoid running into trouble. But as the saying goes—where there’s a will, there’s a way. The Vega family—Nicole (29) and Franklin (33)—are starting over. Three years ago, they left New Zealand to seek their fortune near Erfurt. Back then, they even took Franklin’s children, James and Jennifer, along with them.
However, life in Germany turned out to be anything but satisfying. Although their daughter Amelie was born there, there were few other highlights. Now, they want to return to the sun and the sea. But it could get complicated, as James and Jennifer’s biological mother is waiting for them in Tauranga. Nicole has little desire to have anyone interfere with her parenting, as she sees herself as a devoted, hands-on mom. How will living together work out? And what do the children have to say?
