*Hanseblick* – The Uckermark: Happiness in the Green
Just a short distance from Berlin, yet worlds away from the big city: that is the Uckermark. Its forests, waters, and wide-open spaces draw people—especially stressed Berliners—to this region of Brandenburg. Yet locals, too, cherish the Uckermark for its unique history and natural beauty. Many have never left, while others have returned; everyone has their own reasons for living here.
Exploring by canoe, horse-drawn carriage, and on foot: The "Biorama"—a former water tower converted into a residence, featuring a public observation deck.
Reporter Thilo Tautz visits long-time residents and newcomers alike to discover what makes the area so special. His journey takes him canoeing and rafting in Lychen, riding a carriage along old country lanes, and hiking through the dense Grumsin beech forest.
Two-thirds of the Uckermark is a protected nature area, interspersed with Europe’s largest region for organic farming. Here, a young shepherd from Biesenbrow farms sustainably, using his Skudde sheep—one of the oldest domestic breeds—to help preserve the landscape. In the forest, the Rensch family uses mules to plow the soil.
In Annenwalde, female artists are reshaping village life.
