More often than thought, infections are responsible for the development of depression, ego disorders and anxiety. Viral infections such as influenza can trigger depressive moods, various studies have shown. "In 10 to 20 percent of people with depression + psychosis, our brain water studies show evidence of immunological processes," says Ludger Tebartz van Elst, deputy director of the Department of Psychiatry + Psychotherapy at Freiburg University Hospital. The reason: there is a pronounced interaction between the immune system and the central nervous system.
