My Delicious Garden - At Johannes Orzechowski's
In the midst of the vineyards above Nittel on the Moselle lies the rock garden of Johannes Orzechowski. This is where the grand finale of the SWR garden competition will take place. The 2,500 square metre site extends over seven former vineyard terraces on an imposing steep slope. Since the doctor of physics bought the property four years ago, he has been working on cultivating fruit, vegetables and herbs here. As long as enough water collects in the small cistern, he can water his crops. As soon as it dries up, he has to rely on rain alone. Johannes Orzechowski also faces two gardening challenges: Like his five fellow campaigners, he received sweetcorn seeds from the SWR garden expert in spring and is supposed to grow the most magnificent maize plants possible from them by autumn. Johannes is also making special clay pots to water his tomato plants. This is his second, self-selected project in the garden competition. But the amateur gardener also wants to convince with his garden menu. To prepare it on site in the rock garden, he is setting up an outdoor kitchen. After the menu, when the last points have been awarded, SWR garden expert Dr Michael Ernst will choose the winner of the competition with the "tastiest garden in the southwest".
