Luzyca – Sorbian Traditions from Lusatia
Timed to coincide with the German Traditional Costume Day in the Spreewald, this report explores the distinctive appeal of Sorbian/Wendish traditional costumes. It tells a story of a sense of home, identity, and the powerful feeling of visibly "belonging." The costume signals to the outside world: "I am part of this minority." The German Traditional Costume Association estimates that around one million people in Germany express their connection to their homeland by wearing historical costumes. Cultural studies also examine the impact these costumes have—both on those who wear them and on those who view them. A report by Britta Wulf and Reiner Nagel about clothing with a history, about pride, belonging, and the quiet power of traditional costume.
