Our story - Where are you? - The Blachs - The fate of a Jewish family
From one day to the next, a house purchase changes Friederike Fechner's life. A ruinous baroque gabled house in Stralsund's old town, which she and her husband want to save from final decay. They are awarded the Hanseatic city's builder-owner prize for their successful renovation. When Friederike wants to take a look at the history of the house on the occasion of the award ceremony, she comes across the fate of a Jewish family under National Socialism. The fate of the Blach family.
Searching for clues in marriage, birth and address registers: years of detective work begin, for which Friederike will travel extensively. To New York, to Amsterdam, to Ravensbrück.
Friederike Fechner embarks on an exciting search: Who once lived in her house?
Her search for clues begins in the Stralsund town archives, where she rummages through marriage, birth and address registers together with the town archivist. She comes across the owner Julius Blach, a merchant and leather goods dealer, the birth dates of Julius and his wife Selma's children and all their relatives. An extended family, many of whose members did not survive the Holocaust. Among them were the couple's four daughters, Gerda, Paula, Margarete and Else. But one son apparently made it! The youngest, Friedrich, left Germany on a steamship in 1937 after the Nazis dismissed him from his job as director of the Charlottenburg waterworks in Berlin.
