stern TV Special: 30 years of the Ritter family

Since 1994, stern TV has been following the Ritter family from Köthen in Saxony-Anhalt as part of a unique documentary. At the centre: Karin Ritter and her sons René, Norman, Andy and Christopher. The family grows up in an environment of poverty, violence, alcoholism, drug abuse and xenophobia. As part of a two-part special, VOX is now taking stock. The second part of the programme is dedicated to the fate of Andy and Nicole. The couple live homeless in Munich and both take hard drugs. Then Andy goes to prison for fare evasion. After his release, he is clean and wants to get off drugs.

But less than 24 hours later, he is dead. The special is also dedicated to the life of Renè Ritter. He is released from Volkstedt prison in spring 2024. Renè also wants to get away from alcohol for good. He travels back to Köthen, to his old life. Will he win the battle against alcohol? Prof Nina Kolleck, an educational scientist at the University of Potsdam, and the Ritters' lawyer, Jan-Robert Funck, also have their say in interviews. The documentary also captures other voices of family members and family companions, some of whom speak on camera for the first time.

Broadcasting on 26th of February 2025 at 08.15pm on VOX
